Helping to Support Teaching and Learning

Mechanism Investigation: Investigate how axles and wheels form a mechanism to help children understand movement and mechanical principles.
Varied Components: Includes wheels of various diameters and materials, such as turned wood and cardboard, to offer diverse experiments and applications in both D&T and STEM activities.
Comprehensive Kit: Bumper class kit for D&T lessons and STEM activities. With over 590 components, it supports extensive exploration and creativity.
Hands-On Learning: Encourages practical application of mechanical principles. Children can design and build their own versions, enhancing understanding through hands-on experience.
Key Stage 1 Focus: Supports Key Stage 1 curriculum by exploring mechanisms like levers, sliders, wheels, and axles in projects. Helps children grasp fundamental technical knowledge.

Wheels and Axles Construction Pack

Kit of wheels and dowels to investigate wheels on an axle, demonstrating how they form a mechanism for movement.

Overview

Explore the effects of different size wheels in D&T and STEM activities. Includes dowels for practical application.

Introduce children to basic engineering and mechanical principles with wheels and axles. This pack helps explain simple mechanisms, different types of wheels and axles, and their presence in everyday objects.

The kit contains over 590 components, including wheels of various diameters made from turned wood and cardboard. All wheels have a 4mm diameter hole and come with 300mm lengths of dowel. Plastic tubing is also provided for use as end stops and spacers.
In Key Stage 1 Design & Technology lessons, children use mechanisms like levers, sliders, wheels, and axles in their projects, helping them understand movement. For Key Stage 2, the focus is on mechanical systems such as gears, pulleys, cams, levers, and linkages, and this pack supports these learning objectives with practical materials.

Supports the National Curriculum

Design & Technology, Key Stage 1, Technical Knowledge

Explore and use mechanisms (for example, levers, sliders, wheels and axles) in their products.

Design & Technology, Key Stage 2, Technical Knowledge

Understand and use mechanical systems in their products (for example, gears, pulleys, cams, levers and linkages).

Science, Year 5, Forces

Recognise that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
